History of the Bomboniere What is a bomboniere? A bomboniere is a special keepsake; a small decorative gift that is given to guests at a wedding, baptism, christening, first communion and even anniversaries. A gift is given as an appreciation of their attendance and a gesture of lasting friendship and happiness. The giving of bomboniere can be traced back to Europe hundreds of years ago. Originating in France as "bonbonniere" they were generally reserved for the wealthy. Their contents often included items of gold, crystal and porcelain. Soon after, this tradition had spread throughout most of Europe, namely Italy and Greece. Here it became known as "bomboniere" Each guest would be given a small pouch containing five sugar coated almonds - symbolising health, wealth, happiness, good luck and fertility. Almonds are always given in odd numbers (never even) as odd numbers can never be divided - symbolising again the unity of marriage. These pouches (known as confetti) were given alone or used to enhance another gift. Today more and more couples, regardless of their heritage, are adopting the giving of bomboniere as lasting reminders of their special day. Bomboniere have evolved from simple almond pouches to elaborate gifts such as candle and candles holders, bottle openers, decorative photo frames, figurines and crystal trinket boxes. These little gifts can either be given out by the bride and groom or placed at each table setting. The choice is entirely yours. If your timing is tight perhaps placing them on the tables is your best choice. If your budget is tight - perhaps consider using place cards holders as bomboniere. Think of the impact these little packets of colour will have on an already well presented table. Remember - your bomboniere is limited only by your imagination.
